LEGEND SOUNDTRACK - JERRY GOLDSMITH
By: Steven Mackic on 15 September 2021When Ridley Scott’s (ALIEN, THELMA & LOUISE, GLADIATOR) epic fantasy LEGEND was released back in ’85 here in Australia, the version we got was the European film print that contained the music by Jerry Goldsmith and when I went hunting for the soundtrack, I could only find the version by Tangerine Dream on cassette. A little puzzled by it, I still bought it thinking it was just a concept album of sorts by one of my favourite electronic bands of the time and I loved it. It wasn’t until a couple of years later did I discover the controversy around the score. Scott’s first cut of the film ran for 150 minutes and had contained Goldsmiths graceful, beautiful score throughout. But after an unsuccessful screen test, the film was re edited twice and was shortened to 113 minutes and finally to 90 minutes. Despite after the frustrating experience of having his music cut down in ALIEN, Jerry Goldsmith was still eager to score LEGEND having been entranced by the beauty of William Hjortsberg’s (ANGEL HEART) script for the film. Sadly, when the film was cut down to 90 minutes, much of his score was messed around with as well. Cuts were indiscriminately edited and removed all together along with bits of different cues that were spliced together to make new pieces of music resulting in awkward shifts in key, tempo and orchestration. At that time, Universal Studios President Sidney Jay Sheinberg, felt the original version of the film was unappealing to younger audiences with the Goldsmith soundtrack and replaced it with new compositions by Tangerine Dream for the U.S. release. This was done to make the film more accessible to teenage audiences as well as a more marketable “New Age Pop” soundtrack album. But like the Goldsmith score, it too fell victim to studio meddling. Universal decided a song was needed over the final scenes, so they simply added the vocals of Jon Anderson over Tangerine Dream’s cue for “Loved By The Sun” and it was without their permission! The band was not pleased but had little or no say when this was done, nor when Bryan Ferry’s “Is Your Love Strong Enough?” was added to the end credits. After all these changes, when the film opened in the States, it copped a scalding in reviews and failed to be the hit with the teens despite all its ‘improvements’. It also demonstrates that studio executives should best remain in their swivel chairs and leave the creative work to creative people (even the star of the film Tom Cruise has since stated that the Goldsmith score is the only proper version to see). But with all this being said and done, I still love both versions of the soundtrack only I guess I identify more with Jerry Goldsmith’s orchestral sound as it was the first one I ever heard. I never got to see Dream’s version until I watched The Director’s Cut on DVD in 2002 and was surprised at how it gives the film such a different feel, even with an alternate soundtrack added. LEGEND (whichever version) is always an all time favourite film with me and also is one of Ridley Scott’s lesser appreciated visual masterpieces. This double album vinyl release from Silva Screen, is a wonderful addition to my passion for collecting soundtracks and demonstrates the strong influence they have in rendering and complementing the visual art form that is simply known as the motion picture.

Best Of The Corrs
Sent In By: Peter on 25 March 2024Best Of The Corrs on gold vinyl is a great double album of hits. Discrepancy Records did a great job in dispatching the order quickly and also very securely packing packing the album. It is important to note the LPs were in their own separate liner external to the sleeve so there is no damage to the edges of the sleeve by the records during transit. I have ordered two more albums (one is the Dark Side Of The Moon laser picture disc preorder)and I look forward to purchasing many more albums in the future :-)
