Title: | The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream |
Smashing Pumpkins' second album, "Siamese Dream," released in 1993, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and groundbreaking rock albums of the 1990s. The album, which features 13 tracks, was produced by Butch Vig and recorded in a Wisconsin studio.
"Siamese Dream" represents a significant shift in the sound of Smashing Pumpkins from their debut album "Gish." The album is characterized by its heavy, distorted guitar riffs, layered harmonies, and dark, introspective lyrics. The album also features a unique blend of alternative rock, heavy metal, and psychedelic elements.
The album opens with "Cherub Rock," a song that immediately sets the tone for the entire album. The track features Billy Corgan's signature guitar sound and vocals, with lyrics that explore themes of frustration and disillusionment with the music industry.
The album's lead single, "Today," was a massive commercial success, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song's catchy chorus and upbeat melody contrast with its darker lyrics, which describe Corgan's struggle with depression.
"Disarm" is another standout track from the album. The song features acoustic guitar and orchestral elements, a departure from the heavier sound found on the rest of the album. The song's lyrics deal with Corgan's difficult relationship with his parents and his own feelings of vulnerability.
Other notable tracks on the album include "Mayonaise," a slower, more contemplative song that showcases Corgan's vocal range and songwriting abilities, and "Hummer," a heavy, guitar-driven track with complex arrangements and intense dynamics.
One of the most impressive aspects of "Siamese Dream" is the way that each track flows seamlessly into the next, creating a cohesive listening experience. The album's production is also noteworthy, with Butch Vig using a variety of studio techniques to create a unique and powerful sound.
"Siamese Dream" has had a significant impact on the rock music world, influencing countless artists and bands in the years since its release. The album's combination of heavy guitars, introspective lyrics, and intricate arrangements set the stage for the alternative rock boom of the mid-1990s and beyond.
In conclusion, "Siamese Dream" is a timeless classic that has stood the test of time and remains a must-listen for any fan of rock music. Its powerful, layered sound and introspective lyrics continue to resonate with listeners today, nearly three decades after its initial release.
For fans of Siamese Dream we recommend:
Nirvana - "In Utero" (1993): Nirvana's third and final studio album is a raw, intense, and emotional record that explores similar themes of frustration, disillusionment, and inner turmoil. Produced by Steve Albini, the album features a powerful sound and some of Kurt Cobain's most personal and cathartic lyrics.
My Bloody Valentine - "Loveless" (1991): My Bloody Valentine's second album is a landmark in the shoegaze genre, featuring layers of swirling guitars and ethereal vocals that create a dreamy and otherworldly atmosphere. Like "Siamese Dream," the album is an immersive listening experience that rewards repeated listens.
Dinosaur Jr. - "You're Living All Over Me" (1987): Dinosaur Jr.'s second album is a classic of the alternative rock scene, featuring J Mascis' distinctive guitar sound and slacker vocals. The album is a mix of heavy riffs, melodic hooks, and introspective lyrics that will appeal to fans of "Siamese Dream."
Pixies - "Doolittle" (1989): The Pixies' second album is a masterful blend of punk, pop, and surrealism that has influenced countless bands in the decades since its release. The album features Black Francis' unique vocal style, Kim Deal's infectious bass lines, and Joey Santiago's jagged guitar work, creating a sound that is both catchy and abrasive.
Radiohead - "The Bends" (1995): Radiohead's second album marked a departure from their debut's grunge-influenced sound, moving towards a more melodic and atmospheric approach. Like "Siamese Dream," the album features intricate arrangements, emotional vocals, and introspective lyrics that explore themes of isolation, anxiety, and disillusionment.

Been looking for years!
By: James Harvey on 23 June 2022I’ve been looking for this for years and to finally get it in the collectio is awesome. Siamese Dream is one of my fave albums from my teenage years - so to play it on vinyl rather than cd is amazing. Mayonnaise just blows me away me every time I hear it.

Best Of The Corrs
Sent In By: Peter on 25 March 2024Best Of The Corrs on gold vinyl is a great double album of hits. Discrepancy Records did a great job in dispatching the order quickly and also very securely packing packing the album. It is important to note the LPs were in their own separate liner external to the sleeve so there is no damage to the edges of the sleeve by the records during transit. I have ordered two more albums (one is the Dark Side Of The Moon laser picture disc preorder)and I look forward to purchasing many more albums in the future :-)
