Priest=Aura is the eighth studio album by Australian alternative rock band The Church. The album was named after front man Steve Kilbey's misreading of a Spanish fan's English vocabulary notes (since 'priest' is translated as 'cura' in Spanish). It is the first record they recorded with drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, famous for his work with Patti Smith. His addition to the band brought a fresh, almost jazz-like sound to their music. The album was heavily influenced by psychedelic rock and dream pop, and features the songs “Dome”, “Ripple” and “Feel”. Both the band as well as their fans consider Priest=Aura to be an artistic high point for The Church.

Church album Priest equals Aura stands as an extra
By: Keir Reeves on 22 October 2021For those who love Church there are distinctive periods of the band that fans may identify with as their favourite era. Many of their early great albums spring to mind including Blurred Crusade with Koppes jangly style, the successful Heyday with hits like Tantalised and filmic instrumentals, while others would make a case for their eps such as the rare Sing Songs or perhaps Remote Luxury and Persia or even the lesser known album Seance. Others find late career gems that stand out in their record of 25 releases. Following Heyday in 1985 Church entered their ermine period with Starfish, a record that sounded nothing like they had made before, spawned hits such as Under the Milky Way (it probably paid off everyone's houses) and the massive Reptile fuelled by Marty Wilson-Piper's epic riff. But the commercial stateside success was never really their thing and the come down Gold Afternoon Fix was a better album than the band give it credit for and certainly attracted a new generation of fans who turned 18 soon after the Berlin Wall fell. So having climbed peaks and dipped a few times throughout the eighties and early nineteen nineties the band delivered what must arguably stand as their greatest album Priest = Aura. The four-sided format is excellent as it is a busy album with many tracks and when listened to as four distinctive sides there are clear groups of songs that sit extremely well together. I found the sound on vinyl and the separation the tracks make it a really rewarding listening experience. It goes without saying that the remastering and production values are great, Kilbey's voice is distinctive and his delivery on song and the band sound seemingly like indie guitar exponents and the Floyd. Others have written at length about Priest = Aura's musical strength. Marty Wilson-Pipers's review really sums up how it was a creative peak. This album on vinyl, with all the love, almost thirty years later was overdue for the band's body of work.It sits alongside the recent full double album Starfish with its extra side of outages and b-sides (Warm Spell, Texas Moon anyone) that demonstrates how effortless the band was able to record great material over a sustained period of time from the mid-eighties until the mid-nineties. This era probably stands as the second age of the band. While Starfish found a massive audience and Gold Afternoon Fix basked in the success of its predecessor it's really Priest = Aura that stands as one of their greatest sonic moments. One that capped an amazing era for the band. Cruelly it didn't get a strong commercial response. It was probably out of time in some respects and its themes are dark, even the beautiful elegiac Dome. But listening to it 25 years later it sounds fresh and timeless. Buy it on vinyl if you can, preferably as a brace with the misunderstood but rewarding Sometime Anywhere. Homage.

Best Of The Corrs
Sent In By: Peter on 25 March 2024Best Of The Corrs on gold vinyl is a great double album of hits. Discrepancy Records did a great job in dispatching the order quickly and also very securely packing packing the album. It is important to note the LPs were in their own separate liner external to the sleeve so there is no damage to the edges of the sleeve by the records during transit. I have ordered two more albums (one is the Dark Side Of The Moon laser picture disc preorder)and I look forward to purchasing many more albums in the future :-)
