Conscious

If you want to listen to rap music that gets you thinking then maybe Conscious HipHop is for you.

The early 1980s were not easy years for many in the USA, particularly those from poor backgrounds. Widespread poverty and issues of social injustice and racism made life tough. It is not surprising that these social themes found their way into HipHop. Artist began to present lyrics that spoke about the struggle and striving to improve one’s lot in life. They strove to encourage listeners to thing about how they could move forward while also supporting their communities.

An important track to address these concerns was by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Their classic song “The Message” came out in 1982, to great acclaim.
