Horrorcore

Drawing on horror movie tropes including demons, vampires and gory violence, horrorcore is a sub-genre of HipHop that can embrace the theatrical but also the transgressive. It grew rapidly in popularity in the 1990s with albums by Insane Clown Posse, Bone Thugs, and Big L & Gravediggaz painting pictures of the dark side.

Controversy escalated too, as lyrics about drug use, severe mental illness and extreme violence alternated with songs about self-harm, torture and other dark themes, much to the concern of American law enforcement agencies. This is serious shit. Entry is not recommended for the squeamish.
