Red Hot Chili Peppers

With roots in punk and a penchant for making connections with major musicians associated with other styles—George Clinton produced their 2nd album, for example—Red Hot Chili Peppers formed an addictive hybrid of funk, rap-rock and punk that brought them world-wide fame and fortune in the 1980s, 90s, and beyond. The influences and elements didn’t stop there, however. Psychedelic cookies and chips of metal abound, while many of their hits have melodies and choruses that make you want to sing along.

With many changes of personnel (and a fair share of disaster) over the years, the band centres around the core of Anthony Kiedis and Melbourne born ‘Flea’ (Michael Balzary). Although a dozen other musicians have come and gone, the core sound—funk-driven rock—has remained the glue that holds together both the band and the music. “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” is their biggest seller (almost 8 million at the time of writing) though 1999’s “Californication” is pushing towards six million, which is not half bad. You can dive in and grab a bundle of albums or start with one of several compilations, a good option if you want to test the Red Hot Chili Pepper waters.
