News Catch-up 31 July 2023

Welcome back everyone. Last time, we gave a mention about the upcoming 50th anniversary edition of The Who's Who's Next (which you can read about HERE). This time around, we have even more news about the upcoming Who's Next anniversary campaign.

Joining the new half-speed mastered LP, will also be the release of the Who's Next Super Deluxe 10 CD box set. This edition will contain no less than 155 tracks, 89 of which are previously unreleased and 57 feature brand new mixes. The set aims to bridge the gap between The Who's Life House (the abandoned follow-up to Tommy, spearheaded mainly by Pete Townshend) and the final evolution that was Who's Next.

Here's a breakdown of what will be included on the discs:

  • Disc One features the original Who's Next with a brand new remaster.
  • Disc Two & Three feature Life House demos that span through 1970 - 1971
  • Disc Four contains notable takes recorded in March 1971 at New York's Record Plant
  • Disc Five contains studio sessions recorded in 1970 - 1972 at London's Olympic Sound Studios. Amongst these tracks are alternate mixes, stereo mixes and unique takes recorded during the sessions.
  • Disc Six contains a variety of original single and unedited mixes of certain tracks.
  • Disc Seven & Eight contain two parts of Live At The Young Vic, a live performance recorded in London on 26 April 1971.
  • Disc Nine & Ten will contain two parts of Live At The Civic Auditorium, a live performance recorded in San Francisco on 12 December 1971.

Accompanying the CDs, is also a Blu-Ray audio disc that contains brand new Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound mixes of the original Who's Next album (along with select bonus tracks) created by producer Steven Wilson.

The box set will also contain:

  • 100-page hardback book featuring notes by The Who experts and compilers Andy Neil and Matt Kent, as well as an introduction by Pete Townshend himself.
  • Life House - The Graphic Novel, a newly commissioned, 170-page hardback book overseen by Townshend that tells the story behind the project.
  • A 20” x 30” poster of a live performance in Sunderland, England, on 7th May, 1970
  • A 25.5” x 34.25” poster of a date at Denver Coliseum, Denver, CO on 10th December, 1971
  • A 20-page concert program from the Rainbow Theatre in London on 4th November, 1971
  • A 16-page program from the band's October/November 1971 tour of the UK
  • A collectible four pin button set
  • And an 8” x 10” colour photo of The Who with printed autographs.

The Who Who's Next 50th anniversary Deluxe Edition box set is expected to release in mid September and is available to pre-order HERE.

Joining the Who's Next celebrations will also be the 2 CD anniversary edition. This set includes the new remaster of the original album and a 2nd disc containing certain highlights from the Deluxe Edition set.

Alongside this, there will also be a brand new LP of Who's Next pressed on 'coke bottle' clear vinyl.

This August, we will be seeing 3 very special releases from Australia's very own Paul Kelly. These releases are themed compilations featuring tracks curated by Kelly himself.

The 1st release is themed Time and features 30 tracks over 3 LPs.

Alongside well known anthems like Before Too Long and When I First Met Your Ma are hidden gems/album tracks from Kelly's vast career. 4 of the tracks are exclusive to this release – with the brand new track Back To The Future opening the set – with 3 recently recorded live tracks also appearing.

The 2nd release is themed around Rivers and Rain and features 21 tracks from Kelly's catalogue.

As Kelly himself describes: “When I’m traveling and visiting new cities I always look for the water, be it a river, a lake, a canal, the sea or a swimming pool. If I were to make a compilation of all my ‘water’ songs the track list would be overflowing! So for the second instalment in this themed series, I’ve decided to narrow the channel to Rivers and Rain.”

The compilation also includes 1 new song.

Northern Rivers, recorded last year and previously unreleased, is a love song set in contrasting landscapes”

The 3rd and final release is themed around Drinking and features 18 tracks. As Kelly puts it: "I’m a drinker. For me it is one of the great pleasures of life. A glass of wine or two with dinner, the first beer after hard physical work or sport, a dark ale and a whisky on a cold night. The beaded bubbles winking at the brim of the glass on the surf club balcony looking out over the sea. A little buzz on. The camaraderie of family and friends. Farewells and welcomes and ceremonies.
