Bob Marley

Bob Marley

Born in the poor area of Trench Town, Jamaica, Nesta Robert Marley decided early that music was what he wanted to do. With close friends Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, young Marley—now preferring the shorter moniker Bob—formed The Teenagers in 1961 and started on the path that would take him out of the ghetto and around the world as one of the first genuine World Music superstars. It was in the UK where Bob Marley and the Wailers first tasted success, partly because of the support of Island Records boss Chris Blackwell. Adding a production sheen to their loping, infectious reggae sound, the band’s records hit a chord amongst so many different communities that they became legends.  [See also Bob Marley & The Wailers]
