Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam

Part of the ground-breaking Seattle grunge scene, Pearl Jam have managed to sell millions of albums to an army of devoted fans despite being very wary regarding the machinations of the corporate rock machine. Avoiding interviews and being selective about their music videos, the band fronted by Eddie Vedder are described as alternate or indie, yet this is belied by their early success. Debut album Ten spent some five years on the US chart and achieved Platinum status thirteen times over.

Looking at the themes of Pearl Jam songs may explain their grunge/alt rock status better than the sales. Themes of loneliness, suicide and abuse appear, yet such is the charisma of Vedder, and indeed the band, that many fans attach hope and positive energy to the band and their music. Neither are Pearl Jam shy about sharing their views, supporting Green crusader Ralph Nader during his Presidential run and regularly championing campaigns such as Rock The Vote and other empowering causes.

With eleven studio albums and a host of live releases, the band that formed in 1990 released Gigaton in 2020.
