Porcupine Tree

Porcupine Tree

British multi-instrumentalist Steven Wilson is a big fan of progressive rock but also a restlessly eclectic musician. Although initially creating music for his band Porcupine Tree on his own, Wilson felt that collaboration was desirable and recruited Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan, keyboards) and Colin Edwin on bass. Highly respected prog drummer Gavin Harrison (King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief) replaced the original percussionist in 2002.

The sound of Porcupine Tree embraces space rock and prog, but migrated towards a more progressive metal sound as time went on. Yet it is impossible to neatly classify, as traces of psychedelia and classic rock can also be heard. An early highlight was The Sky Moves Sideways (1995) while Fear Of A Blank Planet (2007) was an intense work that delighted Porcupine Tree’s many fans.

After touring to support the 2009 album The Incident Wilson shelved the band for a number of years so that he could focus on solo projects. He reconvened the band in 2021 to record the excellent Closure/Continuation.
