Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin

It is fair to say that Janis Joplin was the most successful white blues singer of the 1960s. Joining San Francisco’s Big Brother & The Holding Company, she helped power the band to first local, then national and ultimately international success. A dynamic live performer, Joplin’s performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (and appearance in the film of that first tribal gathering) was a huge boost to her career. The band capitalised on this with their first LP Cheap Thrills (1968) and the single "Piece of my heart".

A huge voice and a big wounded heart characterised Janis Joplin’s short and colourful life. Her final studio album, Pearl, was with a new outfit she put together, the Full Tilt Boogie Band. It was her most accomplished recording and was issued, unfinished, after her death from a heroin overdose in 1970.
