Using basic electronic instruments and rudimentary percussion, the German pioneers are credited with influencing generations of musicians to follow. Techno, Hip-Hop, Electronica, EDM… all these would have a quite different feel if the seventies innovators had not existed.
But Kraftwerk are more than ‘electronica’. Their wry humour and performance art image (check out The Man-Machine) are combined with a brilliant melodic sense and the ability to make synthesised music sound richly romantic (Trans-Europe Express excels at this).
Kraftwerk's break-through came with the classic Autobahn and was reinforced when Computer World was a somewhat surprising hit... "I'm the operator of my pocket calculator"
