Marianne Faithfull

Marianne Faithfull

There really should be a film made on the life of Marianne Evelyn Gabriel Faithfull. Born just after the second world war, the English singer, songwriter and actor first caught the public ear in 1964 with the Rolling Stones song "As tears go by", which was a top ten hit in the UK.

Marianne Faithfull continued recording albums through the sixties, while also appearing on stage and on screen. Her next major musical moment came in 1979 with the release of the startlingly powerful Broken English. Managing to combine dance floor beats with edgy arrangements, the album included a fabulous cover of John Lennon’s "Working class hero" and achieved Platinum status in Australia.

With a voice roughened by whiskey and cigarettes, Faithfull has continued to release mature and engaging albums throughout her long career, including a highly praised 2021 collaboration with Nick Cave associate Warren Ellis.
