Neu!

Neu!

‘Krautrock’ is one of those unfortunate labels that seep into common usage having never being defined. One description would be ‘independent non-commercial German progressive rock from the 70s’ but that’s quite a mouthful. The heavyweights of krautrock include Can, Amon Dűűl and Neu! (for starters). Neu! produced three main albums, the self-titled debut and Neu! 75 being the key LPs. Balancing driving, repetitive rhythms and guitar riffs with moments of surreal melodic beauty, Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger (part of an early incarnation of Kraftwerk) produced a small but mightily influential body of music. Fans of Bowie’s Berlin period should investigate.
