Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel

When Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel parted company with the band he helped form, he made a clean break with progressive rock. Unusually, and confusingly for some, his first four solo albums were all called Peter Gabriel. His idea was to have the records look ‘like a magazine’ with the same typeface used and only the image (designed by Hipgnosis) changing. The LPs have become known by those images: Car, Scratch, Melt.

Although there were a number of successful singles along the way, Gabriel went global with his fifth solo outing, So. With a hugely popular film clip (“Sledgehammer”) and a collaboration with Kate Bush (“Don’t give up”) the album was a hit around the world.

Gabriel has created a number of film soundtracks and continued to record and tour, including the orchestral albums Scratch My Back (covers) and New Blood (arrangements of his own songs for orchestra).
