The Police

The Police

Sparking up the sound of pop radio in the late 1970s and early '80s, The Police created a brand of pared back rock with strong reggae overtones with which they dominated the singles charts via a series of immensely catchy songs.

The trio comprised former teacher Gordon Sumner, aka Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and hugely experienced guitarist Andy Summers. All were fabulous musicians, and with Sting’s unique voice and clever songs, The Police produced a series of highly enjoyable and massively popular albums.

If the chart singles are your faves—"Don’t stand so close to me", "Message in a bottle", "Every little thing she does is magic", just to name a few—then a compilation of the hits will, er, hit the spot. But if you want to dig deeper by exploring the albums, your curiosity will be well rewarded by a band who never really received the critical acclaim their music deserves.
