The Beastie's outside their comfort zone
By: DR Reviewer on 4 October 2016The 2009 remaster of Check Your Head does a good job of maintaining the Beastie Boys’ punk rap sound, while showing the full range of musical styles they explored. Youthful and rebellious, the album is a good example of just what rock and hip hop have in common and how to make them work together. Not that it is limited to that, drawing on a wider range of influences, touching on the almost psychedelic at times, as well containing funky and reggae beats. While held together with a core of reliable alternative rockish hip hop, the different styles touched on in the rest of the album add a nice bit of spice that’s worth checking out.
