RSD: BEHIND THE SCENES

RSD has come around quickly, hasn’t it?

DISCREPANCY RECORDS: In one way it seems like RSD 2022 just happened, in part due to there being 2 drops last year, but in another way it also seems ages ago. Last year we'd just come out of lockdown and the shop was still part warehouse space for our online shop, which went crackers during lockdown. We’ve sorted that out, doubling the floorspace for more RSD stock and more room for customers. We’ve also streamlined the purchase process to get folk through faster.

So you are expecting it to be busy?

DR: Interest has been high. Although there are less titles, we've had over 20% more people create wish lists. Plus, the overall number of titles wished for is up a whopping 30%.

With less titles, have you ordered less records?

DR: Exactly the opposite, actually. This year we've tried to cater for every wish on every Wishlist. Even if a particular record drew just one wish, we’ve placed an order. We’ve also ordered more copies of everything to cope with demand. Hundreds of records have already arrived, and hundreds more are in transit. It will all be available on Saturday from 8:00am.

Both popular titles and more curated items?

Absolutely. A frequent disappointment on Record Store Days is how quickly popular titles disappear. We hope to please as many people as possible. Plus lots of jazz and some of the fantastic archival live albums. You could say that for 2023 we have gone "wider and deeper".

One contentious aspect of RSD is when on-line customers can join in.

This year there is a global requirement that online selling may not begin until 9am Monday. We’re setting up the web site to help people know what is available and will have more to say on that soon!

Terrific! Until next time…

RSD online - so driving 500 km

I have 3 titles in my Wishlist for Saturday - I know now they won’t be there on Monday. So I’ll buy overseas if I have to. Driving 500km (return trip over 1000km) tomorrow in the hope I can get at least one of them, the guy has a small store & can’t guarantee me anything, he doesn’t even know what he’s getting - maybe a release list on Friday midnight would be nice thought for future RSD at small venues

As more and more people got back to vinyl or try vinyl for the first time there is less and less titles left to pick from - it is not fair that country people who can’t get to RSD are left with basically nothing to pick from simply because of their geographical location - I’m driving 500 km tomorrow to get to a store for Saturday in the vain hope some titles will be available - what else can you do because no point buying online, the good stuff is gone. I’ve been a customer of DR for a few years now, always paid my account, so I think it’s high time valued online customers are treated like store customers & get access to RSD online at same time RSD store customers do.
