Not the place to begin your journey with Captain B
By: Mick on 11 June 2019If you are new to Captain Beefheart, I suggest that Trout Mask Replica is probably not the place to begin your journey. Instead, I would begin with albums such as 'Safe as Milk' and 'The Spotlight Kid' or even have a look at 'The Mirror Man Sessions.' If you get highly experimental music, then this may appeal, although as much as a fan as I am of the album which I own on vinyl and CD, I found it a very, very difficult album to get my head around. It takes many listens and perseverance, but when it clicks it really clicks. Described variously as employing R&B, blues, and garage rock with strong overtones of free jazz, avant- garde, experimental rock, and art rock. Trout Mask Replica didn't sell well on release in 1969 but time has been very kind to it and the album is now considered one of the most important albums of all time regarding, particularly its influence on other experimental, avant-garde and art rock that was to follow. Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) shows here that he was the Salvador Dali of the music world. Give it time, keep an open mind and you just might be richly rewarded. In any event, an essential addition for any serious music collector.
