Key Selling Points
Tone Poet audiophile reissue – Curated by Joe Harley as part of Blue Note’s premium vinyl series
All-analogue mastering by Kevin Gray – Cut from the original analogue master tapes
180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI – Renowned for quiet surfaces and faithful sound reproduction
Deluxe Stoughton tip-on jacket – Archival-quality presentation
Hard-swinging West Coast jazz classic – Featuring drummer Lawrence Marable and rising tenor saxophonist James Clay
Tenorman captures a powerful moment in West Coast jazz, blending hard bop intensity with the relaxed authority of seasoned musicianship. Led by drummer Lawrence Marable, the session introduced a young James Clay, a gifted tenor saxophonist from Texas whose robust tone and confident phrasing immediately command attention. Recorded with the support of pianist Sonny Clark and bassist Jimmy Bond, the quartet delivers a hard-swinging performance that balances drive, clarity, and cohesion. Marable’s drumming provides both propulsion and structure, allowing Clay to stretch out while maintaining a strong rhythmic foundation throughout the session.
This mono Tone Poet Vinyl Edition presents Tenorman in its most faithful and engaging form. Produced by Joe Harley and mastered all-analogue by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, the sound is punchy, immediate, and true to the original recording. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and housed in a deluxe Stoughton tip-on jacket, the presentation honours both the music and its historical significance. Often overlooked, Tenorman stands as a compelling example of West Coast jazz’s hard bop edge and a vital early showcase for James Clay. As part of the Tone Poet series, this release restores a deserving album to the spotlight, offering collectors and listeners a richly detailed and authoritative vinyl edition.
