Filin marks a striking and unexpected turn in the evolving artistry of Melissa Aldana. Scheduled for release on February 13, this ballads-focused album draws inspiration from Cuba’s filin tradition — a style rooted in romantic song, lyric intimacy, and emotional directness. It is Aldana’s third release for Blue Note and her most understated to date, presenting eight tracks that unfold with patience, deliberation, and remarkable control. Introduced by the luminous lead track “La Sentencia,” Filin places melody at the centre of every performance, allowing Aldana’s tenor saxophone to speak with clarity, warmth, and quiet authority.
The ensemble assembled for Filin is nothing short of extraordinary. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba brings a deep well of harmonic sophistication, while bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kush Abadey provide subtle, responsive support that never intrudes on the music’s contemplative pace. Special guest vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant appears with a restrained elegance that complements the album’s reflective tone. What makes Filin truly distinctive is its embrace of restraint by musicians renowned for their virtuosity. The performances simmer rather than surge, creating an emotional minimalism that feels both modern and timeless. Pressed on vinyl, Filin rewards close listening, revealing a depth of expression and nuance that places it among the most distinctive jazz recordings of its generation.
