Metallica dabbling with sounds outside their comfo
By: DR Reviewer on 4 October 2016A truly reinvigorating live album, S&M pairs Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony. The orchestral accompaniment, composed and conducted by Michael Kamen, adds weight and majesty to Metallica’s thrash. Rather than merely being a gimmicky underscoring, the tracklist was designed by Metallica and Kamen to specifically contain songs to which the Symphony would contribute. With both the grandeur and deftness of the Symphony, many of Metallica’s greats which feature on the album feel reinvented, however I would single out ‘Fuel’, ‘Devil’s Dance’, and ‘Human’ for particular praise. While I doubt that S&M would convince any dedicated classicist to give thrash a chance, metalheads will definitely appreciate the fresh spin and added complexity.
