Affinity captures the Oscar Peterson Trio during a period of quiet confidence and artistic refinement. Recorded in late September 1962 in Chicago and produced by Norman Granz, the album documents Peterson alongside longtime collaborators Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen as they continue to shape one of jazz’s most elegant and intuitive small-group languages. Rather than emphasising virtuoso display, Affinity focuses on balance, interaction, and flow, allowing the trio’s conversational interplay to guide the music. The repertoire blends standards and contemporary compositions, performed with clarity, restraint, and a shared sense of purpose that reflects a group fully attuned to one another.
Among the album’s highlights is Peterson’s first recorded interpretation of Bill Evans’ “Waltz for Debby,” delivered with lyrical poise and understated structural control. Ray Brown’s “Gravy Waltz,” co-written with Steve Allen, provides a buoyant counterpoint and showcases the trio’s rhythmic intuition — a composition that would go on to win the 1963 Grammy Award for Best Original Jazz Composition. This Acoustic Sounds Series reissue presents Affinity in its most revealing form, mastered all-analogue by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. Housed in a deluxe Stoughton Printing tip-on gatefold jacket, this edition honours the album’s subtlety and warmth. Often regarded as one of Peterson’s more understated early-1960s statements, Affinity endures as an essential Verve recording, capturing a trio moving forward with unity, curiosity, and quiet assurance.
