By: Phil Silverman on 27 December 2020Reviewing the CD pressing : this is the first stand alone issue of the mythical lost little richard album - well , I don’t see the original back cover but in this racket you take what you can get ! Four stars for four great songs , talkin about the centerpiece , cut 3, premiered on tv in 1972 but issued on disc in 2005 and now in 2020, Burning up with Love , R and B Country if you will, Richard hitting impossible high notes as expected in this beat ballad which should have been issued at least on an a side way back when . Terrible judgement on the part of the execs at the time . Another slide / wah wah guitar item is If you pick Her Too Hard ...., softly served and captivating . Would have become a college turntable item . Third gem , an original blues , Last years Race Horse ..., Richard quite comfortable challenging Mance Lipscomb. The title tune is not quite a classic but it’s a multi -voiced Richard , celebrating his status as a public figure , but feeling a little melancholy , at the same time . (There’s actually a terrific cover version of this number , on YouTube , with a solid country outfit . We stray from the percussion and pianoless stuff to some acoustic piano uptempo blues with horns on Sneak the Freak , all uptown; then to the worldly weary narration of “the puppy dog song “, something about how dogs and people relate when it comes to bad manners . These kind of rolling expositions were popular at the time , stream of consciousness pseudo hipness , burning up valuable space on a project the public waited and waited for .
