Arriving six years after It Is What It Is, Distracted finds Thundercat navigating the noise of modern life with humour, vulnerability and unmistakable groove. Created primarily in collaboration with Greg Kurstin, the album balances tight, polished production with the elastic bass lines and off-kilter melodies that define Thundercat’s sound. From the playful swagger of “I Did This To Myself (feat. Lil Yachty)” to the expansive feel of “Funny Friends” with A$AP Rocky, the record captures the push and pull between overstimulation and introspection. It sits somewhere between the frenetic social commentary of Drunk and the tender reflection of It Is What It Is, carving out a space that feels grounded yet exploratory.
At its core, Distracted wrestles with the promises of technological progress and the reality of living in a permanently connected world. Thundercat questions the narrowing of imagination in an era of constant upgrades and infinite scrolling, yet refuses to become cynical. Instead, he reframes distraction as both obstacle and creative tool. With contributions from WILLOW, Channel Tres and a poignant collaboration with the late Mac Miller, the album reflects a community of artists navigating the same tension — searching for clarity in the chaos.
