One of New Zealand’s finest exports, Split Enz began as an ‘art rock’ band formed by Tim Finn and Phil Judd 1973. Quirky, inventive songs and a striking live act gained them a cult following on both sides of the Tasman. The recruitment of Tim’s younger brother Neil signalled a shift towards more mainstream pop-rock, with the fifth Enz LP, 1980’s True Colours, being a commercial breakthrough. Over the next four years Split Enz released a number of classic singles including “History never repeats” and “Six months in a leaky boat”. After the band split in 1984, Neil Finn and latter day Enz drummer Paul Hester formed Crowded House.
