Vangelis

Vangelis

Greek synthesiser whiz Vangelis Pappathanassiou was in early prog/psych outfit Aphrodite’s Child with singer Demis Roussos (their key LP 666 is highly regarded). Soon after going solo, he dropped his surname and began releasing electronic albums of invention and grandeur. Vangelis’s collaborations with Jon Anderson (Yes) were enjoyable pop-synth albums, but his key career move was to build an enviable reputation as a film music composer. His first major hit was the soundtrack for Chariots of Fire but the album many regard as Vangelis’ finest moment was the music for Ridley Scott’s Bladerunner, a superb work of atmosphere and beauty, and a core entry in the exclusive category: Film Soundtracks You Must Hear Before The World Ends.
