Formed by Jon Anderson and Chris Squire at the tail end of the psychedelic Sixties, Yes were leaders in the progression of rock music beyond the confines of three minute, three chord songs. Their 70s albums are full of great playing (featuring the massed keyboards of Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe’s quicksilver guitar) and extended pieces full of musical invention. Members departed and returned over the decades, leading to shifts in the Yes sound. This included a harder rock edge when Trevor Rabin joined for hit album 90125. Yet the glory of Yes resides in the magnificent Close To The Edge and epic double-album Tales From Topographic Oceans. Steven Wilson’s 2018 remixes (collected in a fabulous box) are recommended for both fans and newcomers.
