On the 23rd of May 2020, after a decade long hiatus, beloved Australian band Powderfinger proudly re-emerged to present ‘One Night Lonely’. Conceived with the simple aim of bringing a smile to as many faces as possible in these uncertain times, the one-off charity performance raised over half a million dollars for Beyond Blue and Support Act. It was simultaneously viewed by over 90,000 people on its premiere, and has since been viewed over 780,000 times.
The idea for ‘One Night Lonely’ came out of enthusiastic and regular band meetings to discuss marking the 20th Anniversary of Odyssey Number Five, an indicator of the sheer energy the band has toward the recording two decades on.
Today, Powderfinger are proud to announce that a Deluxe Edition of Odyssey Number Five will be released on 4th September 2020 - twenty years to the day of the original release.
10x Platinum, beyond Diamond accreditation; three weeks at #1; 25 weeks in the Top Ten; 6x ARIA awards. Odyssey Number Five was the album that propelled Powderfinger into the stratosphere after the passionate mainstream embrace experienced by Internationalist. It was voted #1 in triple J’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time and earned an inclusion in the 100 Best Australian Albums in 2011.
‘My Kind of Scene’, ‘Like A Dog’, ‘Waiting For The Sun’ and, of course, ‘My Happiness’ and ‘These Days’ became anthems for the time and are some of Powderfinger’s most popular recordings to this day.
They laid the foundation for Odyssey Number Five to earn a place in Australian music history as a classic Australian record.
The Deluxe vinyl is on 180-gram coloured vinyl. Packaged in a lavish gatefold sleeve with full colour inner sleeves, the Deluxe vinyl houses the story behind the album in all-new liner notes from the band. The album has been remastered for vinyl by Don Bartley from Benchmark Mastering and is spread across two LP’s
The anniversary also provided an opportunity for the band to unveil previously unreleased recordings. The original 11-track album has been expanded to 21 recordings, boasting previously unheard acoustic arrangements of ‘My Happiness’ and ‘Up & Down & Back Again’, three B-sides from the time – ‘Nature Boy’, ‘Fuzzy Wolf’ and a sparsely-beautiful piano version of ‘Whatever Makes You Happy’ – and the addition of five covers that offer the biggest surprise and delight to core fans. ‘Love My Way’ (originally by Psychedelic Furs), ‘Rocket Reducer No. 62’ (originally by MC5) and ‘The Number Of The Beast’ (originally by Iron Maiden) will now be available for the first time digitally. The addition of a frenzied rendition of Joy Division’s ‘Transmission’ and a haunting take on Elvis Costello’s ‘Let Him Dangle’ - both previously unreleased - complete a sweep of covers that reveal the melting pot of influences that inform Powderfinger’s alchemy.
From the band:
“20 years is a long time ago. Stating the obvious really... but it also seems so recent. We are honoured that this record is still held in such high esteem for so many people, and the songs are pinned to so many people’s different memories. Similarly, the good, the bad and the hilarious memories of the ON5 sessions come flooding back to us when listening to this record.
ON5 was our 2nd record with our main man Nick DiDia. He cracked the whip with us! We were all in agreement with how "wide" we wanted this record to sound. With him and the Tiddas girls around, there were many light-hearted moments in amongst what really is an emotionally heavy, socially and politically aware album.
After the completion of this record we made our most concerted attempts to crack the U.S. market, but then 9/11 happened and everything came to a grinding halt. We remained at home instead, presenting our record to an Australia which had inspired the many comments about the way the country was being led. It seems that all these years later, not a whole lot has changed with our leaders and many of the observations still ring true. Particularly with the trilogy of disasters in 2020. These Days were definitely not planned to be like this.
