Selling England By The Pound — Genesis' gold-selling fifth studio album!

Mastered directly from the original master tape by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering

Tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jackets with film lamination by Stoughton Printing
Recorded in August 1973 — the tour for Foxtrot (1972) having ended in May of that year — Genesis' members joined for a short time to write new material which covered a number of themes, including the loss of English folk culture and an increased American influence. Hence the inspiration for the title Selling England by the Pound.
Several tracks from the album became fan favorites and were featured as a regular part of the band's live setlist well into the 1980s. "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)," was released in February 1974 and became the band's first top 30 hit in the U.K. In 2012, the album ranked seventh in Rolling Stone's "Readers' Poll: Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time." Selling England by the Pound reached No. 3 on the U.K. charts and No. 70 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums chart.
AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that Genesis hadn't sacrificed its newfound immediacy of Foxtrot with that album's follow-up. They found ways to infuse with the delicate whimsy that was their calling card since the group began.
"This, combined with many overt literary allusions — the Tolkeinisms of the title of 'The Battle of Epping Forest' only being the most apparent — gives this album a storybook quality. It plays as a collection of short stories, fables, and fairy tales, and it is also a rock record, which naturally makes it quite extraordinary as a collection, but also as a set of individual songs. Genesis has never been as direct as they've been on the fanciful yet hook-driven 'I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)' — apart from the fluttering flutes in the fade-out, it could easily be mistaken for a glam single — or as achingly fragile as on 'More Fool Me,' sung by Phil Collins. It's this delicate balance and how the album showcases the band's narrative force on a small scale as well as large that makes this their arguable high-water mark."
All the hallmarks of a top-notch Analogue Productions reissue are here for you to savor: Mastered directly from the original master tape by Bernie Grundman and cut at 45 RPM. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jackets with film lamination by Stoughton Printing.

Amazing Genesis
By: Tom on 23 March 2024Bought this with much anticipation and I must say I was not disappointed. Super quiet vinyl and the soundstage is amazing. Highly recommend this 75 Series. Discrepancy Records were super quick posting the album and it was packed securely. Looking forward to my next Discrepancy purchase!

Exquisite
By: Darren on 13 January 2024I can't say I'm the biggest Genesis fan in the world. In fact, I only started listening to them in 2009, a couple of years after I'd started my foray into progressive rock. To help me find a good starting point, I reached out to members of the Steve Hoffman forum for advice and the first response was Selling England By The Pound. As it turned out, I started with Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme then went from there. In the years since that forum post, I've purchased a German vinyl pressing in 2011, the Blu-Ray Pure Audio version in 2015, and now this 2 x 45rpm version from Analogue Productions. I recently conducted a shootout between the German vinyl and the blu-ray and while the vinyl had nice, extended bass, it was a little on the dark side and the blu-ray was better across the board. Better clarity, extended highs, expanded soundstage and just an overall more enjoyable listening experience (it doesn't help that the album is 53 minutes long - a bit too long for a single LP). I was quite happy to leave it at that, until this Atlantic Records 75th Anniversary reissue series was announced, in particular the Analogue Productions "75 for 75" series. In the progressive rock world, this album is held in very high regard. And rightly so. It didn't floor me instantly, but over time it has revealed itself to be a considerable musical achievement. Over at Rate Your Music, the album ranks #6 for 1973, #210 overall and #5 for progressive rock, while over at the Prog Archives it ranks #2 overall. So, safe to say it's pretty well loved by most progressive rock aficionados. I'm not going to wax lyrical about the music itself - there's plenty of reviews out there. I'll just say that the marriage of complexity and simplicity is perfectly executed. As for this reissue, I'll just come right out and say it may very well be the best sounding vinyl record I've ever heard. No joke. I was transfixed from beginning to end. To start with, the vocals are so clear it's almost spooky. The soundstage is massive in all directions and dimensions. As for the bass, at times it quite literally blooms. And by that I don't mean it's bloated or boomy - it blooms. It's like being enveloped in a big warm marshmallow. The flute melody in "A Firth of Fifth", introduced by Peter Gabriel at the 3.30 mark, followed by the instrumental passage, then the guitar mimicking the flute melody, is truly goosebump-inducing. I realise I'm gushing, but I'm also relaying how I felt while listening. I don't know if it's the mastering by Chris Bellman, the fact it was cut at 45rpm, the superb quality of the vinyl itself (I heard one solitary tick) or a divine combination of all the above. The imaging, instrument separation, depth. It's all quite exquisite. I was hesitant to plonk down $125 AUD for one album, but I have no qualms about purchasing further titles in the series now. There's only a few that interest me, but I won't be hesitating once they're ready to pre-order from Discrepancy Records. Apart from the sound quality, the packaging is first rate. The glossy finish is beautiful and the vinyl itself is flat, clean and quiet.

Maya Jane Coles - Take Flight 3LP box set
Sent In By: Dave on 24 April 2024Well priced and super quick dispatch. Arrived in a sturdy mailer, complete with an oversized outer jacket for the box set, which saved me having to source that separately, and one inner sleeve. Although three inner sleeves would have been perfect (since there were 3 LPs) it was still much appreciated. Not many Sellers include either of those accessories. So all told, a very positive buying experience. Recommended, and i will be buying more LPs in future.
